My EVS in Athens

My EVS in Athens

In January 2014 I packed my huge luggage, it was time in the middle of the winter but my destination was sunny Greece.  I was chosen to be an EVS volunteer for EDRA in Athens where I worked with mentally disabled people. Now one year after spending already two months back in my home country Finland I start to understand what kind of experience it was. I can recommend EVS for everyone who is interested in getting to know a new culture and exploring a different country in Europe. Especially after graduation from high school EVS is a great opportunity when you don`t know yet exactly what you would like do for your job when you`ll get older.

I found my work very interesting in the daily care centre where we did activities like crafts, going out for coffee and cooking. I really liked communicating with our patients. First it was challenging because of lack of common language.  Little by little using body language and learning basics of Greek it became a bit easier. I felt happy to see patients smiling and enjoying what we were doing during our workshops for example candles, keychains and wreaths to sell in the Easter and Christmas bazaars.  My supervisor, coordinator and mentor were always helpful and they tried in the best way to support us volunteers. It made me feel comfortable after a cultural shock in the beginning. It took me some time to get used to live far from home for the first time independently without my family and friends. Now I feel Greece as my home where I hope to go for a visit many times in the future.

Athens is a very interesting place to do EVS. After taking a look to all the touristic sights like Acropolis and museums it`s time head your way to a nice café, a restaurant or a bar. Athens is full of them. There is a lot of events and in the summer period it´s great to go to beach. It`s around half an hour from the city centre by bus or by tram. If you just have a chance you need to go also outside Athens. Greece has countless amounts of beautiful destinations, for instance islands Zakynthos, Santorini and Hydra are really worth visiting.  There are very unique places with different kind of nature. Also in the mainland are very interesting places like breathtaking Meteora with monasteries and mountains and the second biggest city of Greece, Thessaloniki.

EVS is an extremely exciting opportunity in the every field; it`s volunteering, new experiences, friends and growing up!

EVS in EDRA!!

Living in Greece

When I first knew about this type of project I was from the first second interested in being part of, mostly when I had always the conviction that I would not die without doing voluntary service and that is how EDRA and Athens happen in my life.
I applied to the project and, for some months, I thought that I would not be selected among all other candidates because I didn’t had anything that I would consider outstanding and a “must have” in this type of experience. I had, for sure, a huge willing to help, to know more, to meet new people, to discover a different country and a different language. Months later, I got the e-mail, I was selected and I was going to Athens. Here I am, 5 months already, more than half of my project time, and I can’t imagine how I will say goodbye to my life in Athens.

My project is related with my academic studies, I have been working with mentally disabled people who live in a boarding house and were taught the daily basis activities, such as preparing the lunch time settling the tables for the meals. In this house they have also a team of professionals who take care of their needs. The staff is composed my nurses, psychologists and therapists. They have internal activities such as music therapy and external activities, like going out for coffee, go bowling, and events that happen here in Athens, like the Christmas Factory in December.
My biggest lesson with this project so far is that, for this people with this kind of disabilities that are normally excluded because they need so much from us, for me, a foreign girl that didn’t even knew how to say “how are you?”, all they need is a smile, a friendly face and an open mind. A smile really can make a difference and it’s, for sure, the most efficient language.  Because although most of them don’t understand why you don’t know how to speak, they understand that you are there to help them, to be with them not to harm them. And I confess, some days a kiss or a hug from one of them make my day. They notice you, by who you really are, and how you act, not anything else.
In this time that I am here, I met a lot of people that without this I would never have met. I met my roommate, Miriam, that I consider as a sister to me, a person that I could not exclude, and I wouldn’t do it, in any of my adventures in Greece.

I learned how to deal with some difficulties that I would not have to deal if I was in my country, like the language, for me the hardest struggle to deal with in my life as a volunteer in a foreign country, like being away from my family and friends and missing them so much.
I learn how to deal with that… I bought a ticket to Portugal and did a Christmas surprise to my family and friends :)
With the language, well, as the Greeks say “σιγά, σιγά” (sigá,sigá) which means “slowly, slowly” and we can managed it, EDRA provides us a excellent teacher that has a lot of patience to teach us this wonderful language.
And besides it all, you still have time to travel and discover Greece as much as you can. Even staying in Athens, you have a lot to see, explore and discover its mysteries… but I will tell you something, go around the touristic sites, discover Athens on your own, grab a map and start by areas, walk in the streets, feel the Athens atmosphere, and enjoy you experience “Athenstyle”, I would not change this experience for anything in this world!

YouthPass

What is Youthpass?

Youthpass is part of the European Commission’s strategy to foster the recognition of non-formal learning. As a tool to visualise and to validate learning outcomes gained in “Youth in Action” projects, it puts policy into practice and practice into policy:
  • Creating their Youthpass Certificate together with a support person, participants of “Youth in Action” projects have the possibility to describe what they have done in their project and which competences they have acquired. Thus, Youthpass supports the reflection upon the personal non-formal learning process.
  • Documenting the added value of a “Youth in Action” project, Youthpass visualises and supports active European citizenship of young people and youth workers.
  • Being a Europe-wide validation instrument for non-formal learning in the youth field, Youthpass contributes to strengthening the social recognition of youth work.
  • Making visible and validating key competences through a certificate, Youthpass finally aims at supporting the employability of young people and youth workers.
Youthpass guideThe Youthpass Guide provides background and support material to implement Youthpass in your "Youth in Action" projects.

NewBeginnings was formed with a coming together of five professional social workers who have been in this field for more than 10 years. The Vision of the Organisation is "Together for a better world”. This is our spirit behind making everything possible and gives meaning and the purpose to our existence.

Volunteering and NCT (Hosting Organisation): It has been one of the persistent requests from the partner organizations to have volunteers to assist them in their works. We have been receiving volunteers from various European countries for the last 5 years and as of now, there are 19 volunteers working in 14 partner ngos across India. Since we work with a large number of partner ngos locally, the need for placing volunteers with our partner ngos is also at increase. Though we place volunteers with our local partner ngos, NCT remains the primary hosting organisation for the volunteers.

Our networking programmes in India covers almost any part of the country except Jammu and Kashmir. If a volunteer wants to work with any voluntary Organisation on any particular issues, we have our partner ngos to suit the need of the volunteer. The volunteer programme is so flexible that the visiting volunteer plan such a way that makes his/her stay a memorable and exciting one. The volunteer can choose to work in cities, in small towns or remote villages, or even with tribal communities on the hilly areas.

Programmes are available year round and start dates are entirely flexible. The volunteers are provided with accommodation and meals within the organisation. However, if the volunteer or Sending Organisation wishes to the accommodation to be outside the project, NCT will be happy to provide.
