EVS in EDRA!

EVS in Athens in Times of Crisis

When I was looking for an EVS program to participate in, I wasn’t looking for a specific country or a specific city. My decision was based on the program’s description itself and the idea behind the certain experience. However, my EVS experience happens to take place in Athens, Greece.
I didn’t know what to expect of this city, I had never been to Greece in my life before.
Now that I have already spent almost five months here, I can say that going to Athens was the best thing that could have happened to me. Not only is Greece a beautiful country with unique landscapes, beautiful islands, very nice weather conditions and Athens a very lively city which is offering so many events, festivals, concerts and has an appealing bar scene, but it is also a country which is deep into a process of changing and finding its identity as a nation and as a part of Europe. Being here has taught me so much about what it means to be European, what it means to live in times of crisis and fear, frustration and hope. I have met people who were/are very open for discussions, interaction and exchanges of opinions; I have also made “bad” experiences with very closed and narrow-minded people.
To be in Greece also means to perceive the whole situation from a different angle, to get another or, at least, a broadened view on the incidences.
I feel way more European and am also able to define my nationality and identity with new aspects.

Besides all of this, the work in my EVS itself is wonderful and gives me way more than I have to give. I work with people who suffer from mental retardation or psychological problems. These people who are often kept away from public have so much to give to society and demand so little. I enjoy going to work every day and will miss it once I will have to go back to my country.

In summer, I also had the chance to visit other places in Greece. Together with friends I made here I have visited Volos and surrounding area, the temple of Sounio, we have also travelled Crete by car which was by far the most impressive journey I have ever made. We were greeted and welcomed by all the people we met during these 10 special days. Amazing beaches, a stunning valley, many goats and a lot of Raki accompanied us on this trip.
EVS is a huge chance for everyone who wants to experience the spirit of Europe!

EVS project in Hungary!

Búzaszem Foundation from Hungary are looking for one EVS volunteer with specific profile (see below) in our EVS project with topic of sport  and youth leisure. We plan to host two volunteers at the same time. A Spanish boy are selected. We still look for ONLY a GIRL for this position.

There are some fix point of the project.

  • HO is an elementary school with children aged between 7-15 years old.
  • It is a christian school. What does it mean in everyday practise? There is no any obligation with christian background for EVS volunteers.
  • Tasks of the volunteers: sport and free time activities: basicly it depends on volunteers background. Mostly: futball, valleyball, badminton, excursions, cycling, canoeing on the river Danube, in winter ice skating and hockey (if winter is very cold the lake of our town will be iced over otherwise not), méta (it is a special Hungarian sport something like baseball), orgainse championships and other competitions, chess. Unfortunatelly we do not have gym but we have a wonderful river (Danube) and a very good cycle road in nice nature.
  • There is a sport movement in our town called Enter only by families. It means something like all family members are invited from little children up to grandparents. It would be nice to participate in this movement.
  • We would like to establish a cultural-linguistic club in the town for youngsters aged from 16 year old. In this club young people could practice the language, it means only speaking and talking. There is no books and excercises books. Only talking about interesting topics and do someting while talk to each other, for example cooking or hiking or any other else thing.
  • Presentations about health culture for children: moving, eating and so on. A medical doctor will help in this task.
  • Volunteers will live in a rented flat with personal rooms. Do not take into consideration details about accommodation at local families indicated in EVS database decription.

Búzaszem Foundation have specialities in Hungarian traditional arts (music, dance), sport and youth leisure. For this reason, volunteers should have skills in most of these areas:

  • sports and moving, leisure time activities
  • traditional folk arts (dance, mucis, songs etc)
  • good IT and / or communication skills e.g. use of social media, blogging,
  • video, photography, creating newsletters etc
  • a strong interest in and desire to work with children and young people
  • assist in the cultural-lingusitic club

The aim of the exhibition as a whole is to present visual storytelling as a basic element of contemporary civilization, especially in the arts, documentation, learning and communication. While visual storytelling dates back at the beginning of humanity, today our communication is increasingly acquiring visual characteristics, to the point that simulates what we describe as a “visual war”.

We also operate our own website:  www.bordanynet.hu. We take active part in the social life of Bordány. Within the Association we have one subgroups: the Bordány Amateur Drama Circle (Borány Amatőr Színjátszó Kör/BASZK). We established a small gym in the town in 2011 June, with all the necessary equipments in 30 square meters. It is opened for the public for free use on 3 days of the week from 4pm until 8pm. It is near to the school's gym so the showering and dressing room is solved as well.As the organization had set up a charity called Egerhaz Charity, which has built the Vadgesztenye Youth Hostel, the volunteers of our organization also help in running the hostel. The hostel is located in the centre of the town, in the attic of the local restaurant. This is also going to be the home of the volunteer. Everybody can find every needed information about the hostel on the www.facebook.com/vadgesztenyehostel link.

Food and accommodation:
The accommodation is going to be provided in one house of the village, which is a newly renovated house with all the needed equipments. If the volunteers have the same gender, they will share one room, if they have different gender, they will be separated in different rooms. They will have kitchen and bathroom to share with each other nevertheless, they will live there by themselves. Volunteers will get a lunch during weekdays in the local restaurant, then they can buy food for themselves from the local shop and groceries and cook by themselves if they wish in the weekends. The host organisation will pay for their food in the shop and the groceries.

Language learning:
Private teacher will be provided to the volunteers in order to learn Hungarian. In the first 3 months there will be an intensive course, then it will be run based on the needs of the volunteers. Then volunteers have to practice the language with colleagues and target group as well.

Local transport:
In Bordány there is no need for local transport because it is everything is in the centre. Then if they need to go out to the farm, we can provide bicycles or give  a ride. If they have to do something in Szeged which is linked to our project, we will pay for the bus ticket or give a ride by car.

Everyone can learn the choreography and everyone can take part in this great event! The choreography is designed for all level groups (beginners - advanced level dancers).

EVS experience in Romania!

Anastasia writes about her EVS experience in Millenium Center Association, Romania. She participated in a project titled "Smile in Action".

Romania is a wonderful country and I would be crazy if I wasn't interested to live there for 5 months, working as a volunteer with children from ethnic minorities and a researcher. My project, on how to deliver non-formal educational trainings to children and on researching about the rights of kids across Europe, gave me the chance to improve my professional skills and to go on further to my social interaction qualifications. I now know how it is to make kids smile, their parents to trust and be proud of them, and the educators relieve from the sense of having to do too many things, thus putting aside for a while the laughter of kids.

What I enjoy is the multicultural and intercultural aspect of my whole stage, as I live together with people from different parts of Europe; I made real friends and I think I will be really sad when they will be away from me. I will miss "my children", too - and this is a big thing, considering that before this project I did not want to see even a painted child in front of me! And the country... All you can listen about Romania being a land of fairy tales is absolutely true; the forests, the lakes, the rivers and the castles do not let me forget that I live in a place at least with a medieval, theatrical air.
